Film Poster Evaluation

Film Poster
Promotion Day

Promotion Day Plot:

The film plot of 'Promotion Day', involves the story of an office worker that has anger issues, and is going insane because of having the same constant routine in his everyday life.

Through the film, it will portray the Antagonist going through his regular day and will gradually show his mentality state. Involving different situations he comes across and ends up going rogue.

By the end of the film he had murdered various people that had encountered. He ends up killing people with in his work placement, over certain things they have done. After his outbreak he begins to realise what he has done and if he is imagining it all or if it is even real.
Genre: Drama/ Thriller/ Dark Humour

This was achieved using Adobe Photoshop CS6.

When envisioning the idea that I had for my Poster. I wanted to portray a violent and psychopathic vibe, to implement the genre of the film. Drama/ Thriller/ Dark Humour.

Once I had finished my film poster for the new film ‘Promotion Day’. I thought I had created a good quality poster with detailed feature elements from the feature film. I also thought it related to the idea that I had in mind for the film.

I made use of the space in the poster to make the background more visible. To give an idea of the surrounding the film takes place in. For the location I also chose the specific background location, because of it being a key element of the film. I chose a bright and dull office for the background to attract more focus on the character in the poster; with the certain distinctive colours. I wanted to have the background dull and boring to portray the characters prospective and emotions, for him going insane and associating the dialogue from the film which is the tagline.

I also wanted the poster to have space, to implement the idea of him being distant. I positioned the character at the left corner to make space for the font and tagline.

I had made the title and tagline the biggest aspects of the poster, to attract more attention to them; with the title being a key element of the film. After having the idea of the title and tagline being blown up into size, I then added the key colour for the film; which was red. I coloured in individual letters to make the title stand out more, and express the look of it being disorientated creating a gritty and sketchy tone; to impact the mood and genre of the film.

When creating the poster I wanted to include the main character, to improve the story narrative; portrayed through the poster. Originally I was going to use the imagery used on the front of the DVD sleeve, which is the coffee mug that is categorised as iconography. I had changed my design of not using the coffee mug for the poster, because of it being a new franchise; constructing an audience. For it would not relate to the audience because of them not knowing the film or having seen it, to recognize a signature icon of the film.

I had then chosen to use the Coffee mug image in the DVD cover so that the audience that have seen the film can identify the icon in the cover, I thought it would benefit the DVD sleeve more than the poster because of the relation towards the audience.

Research
When thinking of how I would portray my film through a film poster, I looked for various films that partake a similar genre and style. I looked at the two film posters ‘Falling Down’ & ‘Fight Club’. I chose these to film because I had thought that they both have the same crazy and distorted representation that I was looking to suit my film poster. Not only I thought they were similar to the idea for my poster I chose them for their genres and story plot.

I thought this poster had a more influence on my idea, for the use of the main character, iconography and the use of the basic immersive background (which is also a scene in the film).

I also thought this was a useful film to analysis and focus on the use of individual techniques because of it being very alike to my film (Genre & Story).

I also picked up on the use of the background and character positioning, which encourages a serious approach of what the idea of the film is represented in. The character positioning also gave me the idea that it could be portraying the character in a misunderstood mindset or personality with him being quite distant, which makes him distant from others. When thinking of this idea I thought of using this similarity but I then decided to have him closer to detail so I could make his facial expression and blood effect visible in the poster.

I had used this poster in my poster analysis. When I was analyzing this poster I was influenced from the style, which is used in this poster. The aspects from this poster, which I had thought, that would create a good style for the representation of my poster, is the use of the fonts within this poster.

The fonts are represented in a distorted figure, which I implemented in my poster. I thought this would create a powerful demonstration of the characteristic of the film. When I had implemented a distorted font I decided to make the font stand out by increasing the size and filling different sections of the font in red. I used the font as a main element of the film poster to demonstrate the film in a strong visual prospective to influence the style and genre of the film.

1.) I began on taking a picture of the Antagonist to use within the poster, to portray the character and actor in the film. I decided on using a prop in the photo to implement iconography and to establish the sense of violence. The prop that was used was a 'Metal Baseball Bat'.

This is the Photo that I had chosen for the Poster. I chose this photo because it expresses the character’s prospective through his expression. His position in the photo also created an upfront and violent figure, with him caring the baseball bat on his shoulder. It also gave me the idea of it being the aftermath of a violent scene in the film, to show that he’s committed a terrible act of violence. And also gives a certain idea of him being proud and dominant.

I also had this position of the character in mind for my poster, wihich is portrayed in my poster sketch.

This was the Photo that I had chosen for the back cover of the DVD sleeve. I chose this for the cover of the DVD Sleeve to influence the character’s thoughts and feelings. I thought it would represent a dark image, deep in thought or regret and his insanity, realising his actions.

2.) I then started off, with finding a specific background of a work office to set the film's theme; with the film mainly being set in an office.

3.) After finding a suitable background I then moved on to including the title/font.

I chose this font for the sketchy and disoriented look, to set the tone and vibe of the film.

After adding the font I then decided on adding colour to the font to suit the colours of the film's theme (Violence/Danger/Blood/Psychopathic).

4.) Once I had included and enhanced to font I had then went on to adding the main character Antagonist/Actor. After adding the subject into the image I then enhanced his look,  to make him immerse into the scene/image and suit the character.

I enhanced the look of the subject by adding a shadow drop and individual blood splatters over the subject to portray an immersive scene/image.

I had painted the hands of the character and baseball bat in a dark toned red to represent the colour of blood. For the chest, neck and face I had used a blood splatter that I found on the internet.

5.) Once I had finished the character in the image I then added a BBFC's age rating of 18. In the purposal I had thought of a suitable restriction for this film to be an 18.  I had included the age rating in the bottom right corner of the poster.

6.) I then added a production company logo to implement realism towards the film poster. This was a logo I had created for a film poster I had created before, 'Psychoactive'.

7.) After adding in the production logo I then decided to include the tag line of the film. To use a theme and signifying the film/product. The tag line I used was 'Same Sh*t Different Day', I used this tagline to represent the character's insanity and prospective; and to influence the films representation of the idea of the film.

When focusing on the font for the tagline, I had chosen a font from 'DaFont' which had the texture, style and layout of paper.

I had changed this font from the original design/look. I had changed the colour to white and added a Paper looking texture, Inner Shadow and Gradient Overlay to the font to change the look and make it suitable for a sketchy theme; to influence the style and theme of the film.

This was the Original font I used for the tagline.

8.) Once I had added the tagline into the film poster I had then moved on to including a quote. I first thought of implementing the quote 'From the Director of…' ; I had used my other titled film poster I did before, 'Psychoactive' ( From the Director of Psychoactive).

9.) After adding the quote in the poster, I then included the credits of the film. I added the Credit Bar and the lead Actors name.

(Credit Bar)
(Lead Actor)

10.) When I had finished the Credits I then moved to adding fake reviews. I searched and found a five star image on the internet to create a more effective review and make it similar towards real film reviews.

I then added a suitable review to signify the film and relate the film and how another prospective mite pick up on certain aspects of the films style and the story. I used film real  magazine companies that produce reviews for films such as: Premiere & Empire ; to create a realistic.

Once I had finished my film poster I thought it did represent the film correctly and related to the idea that I had in mind for the film.
