Film Poster sketches

The ideas that I had in mind for my poster was to try and create a good visual layout and to create a visual effect which would display certain elements from the film.

Including the antagonist which is referred as the main character in the film. I also thought of having the visual idea of the main character wearing is office work outfit; shirt and tie.

For the genre and style of the film I thought of implementing a weapon and blood to portray that there's violence in the film, and to show that theres darkness in the film. I also thought of the use of the title of the film to portray a certain style.

This was one sketch Idea I had for  a cover for my poster or DVD sleeve. I thought of the use of iconography to signify the film.

I thought this would connect with the dark humour of the film, with the use of psychism.  And referencing the violence in the film with displaying blood splatter on the coffee mug.

This was another sketch Idea that I had created for the film poster. It has a reference of violence and the aspect of the film being based upon the main environment of being an office room, with the use of a work tie and shirt (which is worn by the Antagonist).

Poster Analysis

Poster Analysis

Fight Club

The Fight Club's Film poster includes various elements of selling their film. Here are some of the advertisement techniques that are used, within the poster.

At the top the poster displays the credits of the Actors and Director in the production of the film. The Actors that were credited include, Brad Pitt & Edward Norton. The Director of the film is credited as David Fincher.

The font that is used for the credits in the poster is portrayed as a gritty tone and uses Italics. Credits within films are one of the biggest selling points of the film, because of the Actor's popularity and success of being an actor. It can also be the same for Directors, Writers and Producers of the film.

The Poster not only uses the Actors names, but also includes them in the Poster of the film. They are used in the poster of the film to display their face, this is one of the simple selling points within advertising. The reason why this works is because of their popularity, of being recognised.

The title of the poster I think is the best part of this poster, because of the way the title is represented. The title of the poster is displayed within an object, which is a bar of soap. The bar of soap plays a part in the film, this is a reference to one of the famous parts in the film.

The tag line within the film poster displays 'MISCHIEF. MAYHEM. SOAP'. This is an explanation of the film it self, the words are in capital letters to stand out and to get the message across to inform the audience of what type of genre the film is categorized in.

The colors that are used in the film poster have a gloomy tone to them. It seems the poster has a lite colored green wash over the key elements of the poster, including protagonists and background. The lite green wash is used to create a dark tone and to make the protagonists immerse  with the background.

The background displays a brick wall, it looks like one of the scenes from the film which is the back of a public house. Where both protagonists fight for the first time and create fight club. They use this specific scene for the poster, because of it being one of the key scenes of the film.

Killing Them Softly

The film poster of 'Killing Them Softly' uses certain aspects of advertising which include a various amount of marketing techniques here are some that I have analysed.

The First thing that stands out the most to me has to be the cast displayed in the poster which include Brad Pitt, Richard Jenkins, James Gandolfini and Ray Liotta. The film uses the cast in the poster to represent the great cast involved in the film and to make it catch the audience's interest, because of the great actors within this film.

The credits in the poster also display the cast, which again is representing the actors. The credits also have Brad Pitt's name displayed above the cast, this is one of the biggest selling points of the film because he is one of the most iconic actors of this modern day era.

The Poster also displays Brad Pitt's name above the other cast members because he is in fact one of the Producers of the film.

The Title of the film's font is portrayed as a basic style but uses the effect of bold. The title isn't all in the effect of bold, the only words that use the effect of bold is 'Killing Them'.

They've used the effect of bold on these words to make them stand out and to also create an effect of the last word that doesn't use bold, which is 'Softly'. The creators of the poster did this to make it signify softly with the use of font.

The Poster also includes a tag line, "In America you're on your own". This is used to connect with one element of the film's story line and also connects with the background.

The Background displays a faded American flag which uses dull and dark toned colours. They use dark toned colours in the poster to represent the genre of the film. Within the background it also displays a scene from the film to make the poster look more interesting and unique.

One other selling point that is used within the poster is ratings and highlighted reviews. This adds to the appeal to the film, to make the audience want to go watch the film because of the ratings & reviews.

Iconography is used in the poster, as it displays a gun (shotgun) which Brad Pitt is holding. This is used to represent that the film is violent and a Crime Thriller.

The Poster includes a release date for the film as well, this is used to inform the audience of when this film will be showing in the cinema and makes the audience think more about the film.

The Equalizer

In this poster there are various techniques used within the poster. For instance there is use of the title that displays the genre of the film. The font uses a highlighted red, they use this to make the title stand out and connect with the genre of the film. The colour red can represent evil, violence, action, vengeance and blood.

The font also uses a sketchy tone that looks like scratches, this gives it an action look and feel to the poster which links with the genre.

The Poster includes the protagonist in the film, they use this to show who is the protagonist in the film. They also use Denzel Washington in the poster as a selling point because of popularity of being a successful actor.

They also use Denzel Washington's name in the poster to credit him and enforce the selling point of him being in this movie.

Using text based information they include the tag line of the film, "What do you see when you look at me?" this implements a main quote from the film to make the audience remember the film.

The creator's of the poster also use another selling point to promote the film by displaying, "From the Director of Training Day". They use this to attract the audience/fans  of that film, and use the success from the specific film to gain the popularity for the film.

The release date is also included in this poster to inform the audience when this film will be shown in the cinemas. This also works towards making the audience remember the release date for the film.

The background of the poster uses dark toned colours to represent the genre of the film and the style. The colours of the background also benefits the title of the film to make the title stand out.

Iconography is also used in the poster, which is a weapon (gun) held by Denzel Washington. This also represents the genre of the film and informs the audience that the film is violent.

Fury

The poster uses different amounts of techniques to attract the audience. The poster displays its title on the side of a tank barrel, this makes the title more immerse. The tank barrel is also referred as a iconography, which indicates 'war',  because of it being an military tank (barrel).

The poster also includes a character of the film, which is portrayed as 'Brad Pitt'. The appearance of his character is, suited in a world war 2, tank Sergeant outfit. The reason why he is classed as a Sergeant is because of his rank, that is displayed on  both sides of his arms. Adding this icon can make the character more immerse and can give an idea of the character by his rank.

His characters outfit also displays an other icon, which is just above his rank on his left arm. This icon represents a tank squad, and the tank sergeant. This indicates what soldier Brad Pitt's character is within the film.

The stance that Brad Pitt is shown in this poster, displays him leaning over the tank barrel and starring down. This could indicate a sad and serious emotion that he is representing, displaying that war is wrong and signified in a emotional way. This is displaying war in its realistic form of nature, instead of presenting it in a heroic and patriotic prospective.

The background also links with the way Brad Pitt's character is represented. The background implements a dark clouded sky which makes the vibe of the poster - dark, gloomy and emotional. It also can reflect on the vision of war, 'Destruction'.

The poster also uses a tag line, 'War never ends quietly'. This is again referring to the war's realistic form of nature, and the linking with the military tank, referring that a tank is loud. It can also signify that war never goes out unheard of, that it goes out with a bag!

This poster displays a quantity amount of techniques to draw the attention of the audience. The poster has the title of 'Mad Max', this is a well known trademark, and draws the audiences attention just by including the title.

The reason the poster doesn't use a great amount of selling points, unlike the majority of other film posters, is because of the trademark it self. Using the trademark of the film is the key element of selling the product, which makes it more easy to make without including any other techniques.

One other important technique the poster uses is the background, the background displays a location that is in a desert and has a bright but gloomy sky. The desert in the background repents the exact location that the film takes place in, the desert can also give a reflection on which type of genre the film embraces.

The genre that is referred in the background embraces a rough and gritty tone, the background also includes the protagonist and his vehicle. The protagonist is stood facing out towards the desert, which makes him mysterious and decisive. The vehicle that is displayed in the poster, seems chaotic and apocalyptic, this influences the type of style and genre the film is portrayed in.

Within the poster also displays a tag line, 'What a Lovely Day' use of language is to link with the title and genre of the film. The language within the tag line, is referencing to the film being chaotic. The font that is used for the tag line is presented in a scribbly font, which indicates that the use of language is being sarcastic.

The poster also presents a release date of when the film will show in the cinemas. The release date is the fall of 2015. The release date is to inform the audience of when to look out for this film and keep them tuned to the news of the film.
